Arm Chair Traveler Reading Challenge

Wow, "armchair traveler" is a pretty good description of me, actually. I LOVE traveling. I love seeing new places and expanding my world. Sadly, I actually have yet to leave the soil of North America (Hawaii is still in North America, right?) and books must suffice for now. =)

This challenge has been bouncing around on several blogs and decided that I really want to participate too, since there are almost enough qualifying books in my to-read stack already. =)

Visit the host site A Life In Books for more info, but here are the rules:

  • The challenge runs from July 1 through December 31 during which time you must read six books that fall under the ‘armchair traveling’ theme.
  • Fiction or non-fiction works are fine, and do not need to be specifically travel related, as long as the location is integral to the book - I’ll leave that to your discretion. Locations must be actual places that you could visit, so no Middle Earths or galaxies far, far away.
  • Books may be cross-posted to other challenges, but you cannot count any books read prior to July 1st.
  • To join, make a post outlining your six choices and link to that post below. Because I like to have a little wiggle room, you can opt to switch out books throughout the challenge.
  • And yes, there will be prizes!

  • Here are my picks:

    The Poisonwood Bible (The Congo)
I have already started this one, but have a long way to go yet.

    No Graven Image (Equador)
Elisabeth Elliot's only work of fiction, this has been on my shelf for a while. After reading Melanie's recommendation, I am motivated to read it soon.

    The Thirteenth Tale (England)
I recently got this and am very much looking forward to it because it is supposedly written in a Bronte-like style.

A Tree Grows in Brooklyn (New York)
This one also has been on my shelf for several months.

    Mimosa (India)
I read this when I was a kid but don't remember it. Having recently read a biography on the life of Amy Carmichael, I determined to read one of her books.

    Reading Lolita in Tehran (Iran)
    Jane's review sparked my interest.

    Bonus:

    A Thousand Splendid Suns (Afghanistan)
Kite Runner was a fascinating story, so I'm hoping this one will be too.

***I would also like to read another good missionary biography or two. Does anyone have any good recommendations?

What a great list of books! I'm going to have to check a few out for myself.
I loved Mimosa - it is a true story and an amazing testimony of the Holy Spirit's work in teaching us how to live for Christ.

My favorite missionary bio is A Chance to Die (by Elisabeth elliot about Amy Carmichael) - is that the one that you read? I love her Candles in the Dark and His Thoughts Said...His Father Said.

So glad you are joining in! Look forward to see what you think of Lolita and Poisonwood Bible. I have got to read the Kite Runner, I must be the only person who hasn't read it yet! Also Amy Carmichael is one of my favourite authors/missionaries and I never knew that Elisabeth Eliot wrote a fiction book, how interesting!

    4. Kathi Hayes on August 3, 2007 3:35 AM

My 2 favorites are: No Graven Image and A Chance to Die--both by Elisabeth Elliott. I was so happy when they recently reprinted No Graven Image--it was out of print for over 20 years. I read it on a train going to Malaysia to renew our visas during our first term in Thailand. (Joey wasn't even born yet!) When Mr. Hayes saw I'd finished the book he asked how I liked it. I burst into tears, because it had affected me so deeply and given me so much to consider as a new missionary. I recommend it to new missionaries.

OOOHHH! I want to join! I have only two books to add to the list at present, but love to travel as much as I do read. My 11 yr. old said yesterday "Mom, when you read, do you make a movie in your brain like I do?" :) Yes I do Virginia!
OK- So books most include a place away from my present--
      1) "Cape Refuge"- I'm not really into Christian romance novels but want to read this one
      2)"End of the Spear"
Will include other titles later :)

Okay, I found enough books on my shelves, so I'm in too. I've included a book and sequel that I'll be reading to the children, but I've never read them and always wanted too, so I guess that will count?

I did read A Chance to Die just recently. I'm hoping for some more good biographies, but don't know where to start! There are just too many books out there...

Evidence Not Seen-A Woman's Miraculous Faith in the Jungles of World War II by Darlene Deibler Rose. She was the first American missionary woman to Papua New Guinea. It is an excellent book and well written.

I have read the Poisonwood Bible and it was good. I wish I had more reading time, but I just don't right now. Good luck though. Before Eli was born, I read constantly.

Hi there Loraena. LID stands for Log In Date and when you adopt from China, it is the date that the Chinese Center for Adoption Affairs enters your dossier into their system. When they assign babies to their parents, they do it chronologically according to your LID. My LID is 2/6/2007, China just processed adoptions through 11/21/05. So, I have a long wait ahead of me still.

      Hi Loraena,

Tracy from Bizzy house pointed me this way for adoption pics (we're adopting from Ethiopia) but this post caught my eye. I LOVE to read almost anything.

I've read Poisonwood Bible -very interesting and kind of affected how I view missions and Congo, until I let it sink in that it is historical fiction- I'm excited to go the the Desiring God national conference in September to hear Helen Roseveare, missionary in Congo, talk about endurance.

Also, I finished the Thirteenth Tale not long ago. Very compelling and 'clean' reading too. I was impressed and the story is intriguing.

I have a Thousand Splendid Suns on reserve at the library after hearing the secretary of education on NPR book hour recommend it. She also recommended Eat, Love, Pray and The Master Butcher's Singing Club. Have you read either of those?

Missionary Bios - It is Not Death the Die by Cromarty about Hudson Taylor (kind of hard to come by). I just picked up a book about the Stams who were martyred in China in 1930ish. Looks good and their story is well known.

sorry for the long post on my first visit. Books do that to me! Happy armchair reading!!!

      Lisa J

(and now I'm gonna go look for the adoption pics that Tracy mentioned :)
