Hi Loraena,

Tracy from Bizzy house pointed me this way for adoption pics (we're adopting from Ethiopia) but this post caught my eye. I LOVE to read almost anything.

I've read Poisonwood Bible -very interesting and kind of affected how I view missions and Congo, until I let it sink in that it is historical fiction- I'm excited to go the the Desiring God national conference in September to hear Helen Roseveare, missionary in Congo, talk about endurance.

Also, I finished the Thirteenth Tale not long ago. Very compelling and 'clean' reading too. I was impressed and the story is intriguing.

I have a Thousand Splendid Suns on reserve at the library after hearing the secretary of education on NPR book hour recommend it. She also recommended Eat, Love, Pray and The Master Butcher's Singing Club. Have you read either of those?

Missionary Bios - It is Not Death the Die by Cromarty about Hudson Taylor (kind of hard to come by). I just picked up a book about the Stams who were martyred in China in 1930ish. Looks good and their story is well known.

Hi there Loraena. LID stands for Log In Date and when you adopt from China, it is the date that the Chinese Center for Adoption Affairs enters your dossier into their system. When they assign babies to their parents, they do it chronologically according to your LID. My LID is 2/6/2007, China just processed adoptions through 11/21/05. So, I have a long wait ahead of me still.

Evidence Not Seen-A Woman's Miraculous Faith in the Jungles of World War II by Darlene Deibler Rose. She was the first American missionary woman to Papua New Guinea. It is an excellent book and well written.

OOOHHH! I want to join! I have only two books to add to the list at present, but love to travel as much as I do read. My 11 yr. old said yesterday "Mom, when you read, do you make a movie in your brain like I do?" :) Yes I do Virginia!

My 2 favorites are: No Graven Image and A Chance to Die--both by Elisabeth Elliott. I was so happy when they recently reprinted No Graven Image--it was out of print for over 20 years. I read it on a train going to Malaysia to renew our visas during our first term in Thailand. (Joey wasn't even born yet!) When Mr. Hayes saw I'd finished the book he asked how I liked it. I burst into tears, because it had affected me so deeply and given me so much to consider as a new missionary. I recommend it to new missionaries.

Also Amy Carmichael is one of my favourite authors/missionaries and I never knew that Elisabeth Eliot wrote a fiction book, how interesting!

What a great list of books! I'm going to have to check a few out for myself.
I loved Mimosa - it is a true story and an amazing testimony of the Holy Spirit's work in teaching us how to live for Christ.
